Bridging East and West: Why Celtic Taoism is the Spiritual Fusion You Didn’t Know You Needed

Have you ever looked out at a forest or a quiet river and felt a deep, wordless connection to everything around you ?

For centuries, people across the world have searched for ways to put that feeling into words. Two of the most profound answers emerged thousands of miles apart: the ancient, nature reverence mysticism of the Celts and the flowing, balanced philosophy of Chinese Taoism.

Today, these two ancient paths are coming together in a beautiful modern movement known as Celtic Taoism.

Elevated Therapy ® and the work of Dr Michael G Millett has been working with these constructs for decades in his practice to help people.
It isn’t just an academic theory; it is a deeply personal, lived search for balance. It invites us to treat the natural world as a living reflection of the divine—and a perfect mirror for our own inner lives.

Let’s dive into how these two worlds meet, how they are being used in modern clinical therapy, and why they might just change the way you view your own mental health.

The Ultimate Crossroads: Where the Druid Meets the Tao

While separated by massive geographic distances, the spiritual heart of both traditions shares remarkable, uncanny parallels.

Traditional Taoism—rooted in the Tao Te Ching—focuses on living in harmony with the Tao (The Way) by practicing simplicity, spontaneity, and Wu Wei (effortless action).

Celtic Spirituality shares this exact same awe for the wild earth. Both traditions recognise that light cannot exist without dark, emphasising balance within the cosmos. By merging them, Celtic Taoism allows us to apply timeless Eastern frameworks to Western landscapes, ancestral roots, and localised folklore.

The Unconscious Current: How Hypnotherapy and Taoism Intersect

The connection between Taoism and modern clinical hypnotherapy rests on a shared, deeply personal goal: dissolving artificial conditioning to reveal who you truly are.

In Taoist thought, our suffering arises when we stray from Ziran (our natural state) due to rigid societal or family expectations.
Similarly, clinical hypnotherapy recognises that our emotional pain and destructive habits are often rooted in negative unconscious programming established during childhood.

THE NATURAL HARMONY MATRIX

  • Celtic Spirituality

    The Sacred Grove
    Wheel of the Year
Ai (poetic inspiration / divine inflow)

  • Taoist Metaphysics

    The Quiet Mountain
    Yin and Yang Cycles
    Qi (Life Force Flow)

Where Hypnotherapy and Taoism Converge

  • Your Authentic "Ziran" State

  • Overlaid by modern stress & social anxiety * The Unconscious Mind (Where blocks hide)

  • Hypnotherapy Trance State * Practicing "Wu Wei" (Gently letting go without force)

  • Restored Internal Harmony & Emotional Flow (Chi)

Celtic Taoism

Hypnotherapy acts as a modern conduit for Wu Wei (effortless action). By entering a relaxed, receptive trance state, we bypass the analytical, resistant conscious mind.
This allows us to access the unconscious, where trapped emotional blocks and rigid cognitive loops can be unmade without aggressive psychological force.

Rather than “fighting” your own psyche, hypnosis allows you to yield, gently dissolving obstacles so your internal Chi (energy) can flow naturally once more.

Real-World Magic: Elevated Therapy International

This practical framework isn’t just conceptual; it translates directly into contemporary wellness through the work of Elevated Therapy International. Established by Dr. Michael G. Millett, this therapeutic and coaching practice originally launched in London in 1995 before expanding to Lincolnshire in 2011. It serves as a real-world bridge between clinical therapy and spiritual tradition.

Dr. Millett’s approach anchors healing in the Taoist premise of Ziran—cultivating a stress-free, introspective approach to personal freedom—while utilising Western hypnotherapy and psychotherapy to untangle psychological baggage.
By integrating Eastern energetic arts like Qigong alongside unconscious processing, it provides a grounded, earth-centered space for holistic recovery.

Irish Roots and Heraldic Symbolism

The alignment with Irish roots provides Celtic Taoism with its foundational, earth-anchored identity. To solidify this synthesis, the official Elevated Therapy Coat of Arms was formally commissioned and registered in County Kilkenny, Ireland, serving as a visual map of the philosophy’s cross-cultural elements.

The heraldry leans heavily into ancient Irish iconography to mirror Taoist metaphysics:

  • The Green Trefoil (Shamrock): Central to the Irish heritage of the practice, the shamrock represents the sacred triad. Long before Christian times, the Druids revered the plant because three was the most sacred, magical number symbolising totality—Body, Mind, and Spirit. This concept perfectly mirrors the Taoist cosmic triad of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity.
  • The Mullet (Star): Positioned to indicate an upward-surging spirit, the top point of the star reflects the immanence of the soul and the ethereal element of universal life force.
  • The Dual-Language Mottoes: The shield carries twin phrases: the Irish “Ardaíonn an aigne suas” and the Latin “Tendens ad aethera mens”, both translating to “the mind extends upward.”

Parallel Paths: Druids and Taoist Masters

The alignment found within Celtic Taoism is a recognition of profound, ancient parallels. When we examine the historical roles of the ancient Celtic Druids alongside the early Taoist Masters (Zhenren or “Realised Ones”), we see two cultures independently arriving at nearly identical conclusions about the cosmos.

Guardians of the Natural Order

Neither the Druids nor the early Taoist Masters operated as dogmatic priests of a centralised religion.
Instead, both functioned as philosophers, scientists, healers, and keepers of natural law.
Druids tracked the cycles of the seasons and the stars, while Taoists observed the behaviour of water and the shifting balances of energy to understand the
Tao.

The Sacred Wilderness

The environments where these masters sought enlightenment reflect an identical spiritual ecology. Druidic practice took place in outdoor sanctuaries known as nemetons—sacred oak groves and natural springs (plural: nemeta) where the veil between worlds was thinnest. Taoist hermits similarly bypassed urban areas, retreating deep into sacred mountains to live in simple huts, meditate under waterfalls, and absorb raw Qi from the Earth.

Cosmological Triads

Both traditions reject strict, polarising black-and-white dualities. In Druidism, the cosmos is divided into three interconnected realms: Land, Sea, and Sky. In Taoism, while Yin and Yang represent dual forces, they always interact to form a triad: Heaven, Earth, and Humanity.
Both paths understand that true harmony is a dynamic, multi-dimensional process.

Fluidity Over Rigid Dogma

Ancient Druidism was entirely oral, memorised through poetry and song to ensure the philosophy remained fluid and adaptable.
This mirrors the fundamental opening warning of the
Tao Te Ching: “The Tao that can be spoken is not the eternal Tao.”
Both paths recognised that ultimate truth cannot be bound by static text or artificial societal rules. To be a Master meant becoming like water—flexible, receptive, and in constant flow.

Final Thoughts: Finding Your Flow

Celtic Taoism reminds us that we don’t have to choose between modern psychological science, Western heritage, and Eastern metaphysical wisdom. By uniting the ancient secrets of the East with the earth-based magic of the West, we can find a refreshing, grounded, and deeply personal path to spiritual growth and emotional resilience.

What do you think? Does the idea of blending Western nature reverence with Eastern flow resonate with your own spiritual journey ?

Druidism vs Taoism

Ever feel completely disconnected from your body, your heart, or your intuition ?

Before modern chakra systems gained popularity in the West, ancient Celtic mystics used a powerful framework called
The Three Cauldrons to master their energy.

According to 7th century wisdom, every human is born with three internal energy centres that govern physical vitality, emotional flow, and cosmic insight—but life experiences often knock them off balance.

If you are ready to stop feeling scattered and start feeling deeply grounded, aligned, and inspired, get in touch with Michael to explore this immersive, hypnotherapy session designed to turn your inner cauldrons upright.

Awakening Inner Wisdom: A Guided Hypnotherapy Journey for the Three Celtic Cauldrons

In our fast-paced modern world, it is easy to feel disconnected from our bodies, our emotions, and our deeper intuition. If you are looking for a unique framework to regain your balance, ancient Celtic spirituality offers a beautiful roadmap known as The Three Cauldrons.

Long before modern chakra systems became popular in the West, early Irish wisdom and lore spoke of three internal energetic centres that govern our physical vitality, emotional expression, and spiritual wisdom.
By working on these centres, we can realign our mind, body, and spirit.
What Are the Three Cauldrons ?

The concept of the Three Cauldrons was likely composed in the early 8th century by an unknown poet in Ireland, though it stems from an older oral tradition – usually translated into English as ‘The Cauldron of Poesy’ – and it is important for the Bardic and Poetic comprehension of ‘inspiration’ (known as Imbas in Irish). It is preserved in a 16th-century manuscript at Trinity College Dublin.

According to the 7th or 8th century seminal Irish text The Cauldron of Poesy, an Old Irish mystical and educational text outlining a spiritual psychology of the human mind, every human being is born with three cauldrons inside them:

    1. The Cauldron of Warming (An Coire Goiriath): Located in the lower abdomen, it represents our physical health, roots, and primal life force.
    2. The Cauldron of Motion (An Coire Ernmae): Located in the chest, it represents our emotions, relationships, creativity, and how we move through life’s experiences.
    3. The Cauldron of Wisdom (An Coire Sois): Located in the head, it represents intuition, divine inspiration (Ai or Imbas in Irish), and cosmic connection. Historically, “Imbas” refers to a sacred, visionary poetic trance (specifically Imbas Forosnai) practiced by ancient Irish seers and poets, the fili, to attain holy divination and enlightenment.

At birth, these cauldrons are in different positions—some are upright, while others are turned on their sides or upside down.
Through life experiences and intentional practice, we can turn them upright to hold the nectar of wisdom and vitality.

Get in touch with Michael to arrange your 2 Hour Session as it is for EVERYONE regardless of heritage, background or challenges.

Spirituality thrives when it embraces diversity. While specific religions have distinct doctrines, the core essence of the spiritual journey—the search for connection, meaning, and inner peace—is universal and transcends cultural and dogmatic boundaries.
Even for many atheists, spirituality is about connection, meaning, and wonder rather than the supernatural.
Atheism only means a lack of belief in deities.

So, if you are interested in living in harmony with the natural flow of the universe to reduce stress and find peace by letting go of control and embrace balance – this session will help you.
We can explore how to awaken these ancient forces within you through the unconscious emotional flow to achieve more with far less stress and resistance. 🌊 Turn your cauldrons upright now.

Michael is a trained transpersonal therapist as well as being a qualified Metaphysician for many years, and has several professional therapy qualifications in clinical practice including as a clinically trained counsellor, psychotherapist and hypnotherapist.
He comes from direct Irish heritage from both parents.
