1) In a quiet room take a candle and light it. It can be any colour but I would suggest a blue or a white one.
2) Dim the light in the room, so that the flame of the candle will stand out. Look deep into the flame and focus on it.
3) Put the candle on a table and sit on a chair in front of it. Ideally with the candle at the same eye level as your eyes and about 2 feet away from you.
4) Take care to sit with your back straight.
5) Take a few slow deep breaths.
6) For a few moments, relax your body and ease any tension in it.
7) Now, focus your attention on the flame of the candle. This is all that you need to do, just look at the flame as it moves, flickers and changes shape and colour.
8) Try to keep your attention solely on the flame of the candle, without thinking of anything else or looking at anything else in your surroundings. Don’t let your eyes become fuzzy (dissociation).
Your mind will then become filled with thoughts, everyday concerns and trivial information.
Just focus your complete attention on the flame of the candle by bringing your mind back to the candle. After a while any intrusive thoughts will just drift away.
9) Blink, as often as you feel that you need to blink.
Start with 5 minutes a day, and gradually, as it becomes easier, lengthen the time to 10 minutes a day.
Eventually build up from 5 minutes a day to about 20 minutes.
Do this over months. You can use an alarm clock or your phone if you wish to set the time.
Your eyes need to adapt to the light which they will.
Before you are finished, it is important to bring yourself back to reality and connecting with your physical world once again.
An easy way to do this would be to:
Close your eyes
Take a few deep breaths, imagining the breath travelling to the tips of your fingers and toes. At the same time, imagine your fingers and toes connecting with the earth, like the roots of a tree, solid, steady and secure.
Feel a gentle and peaceful feeling surrounding you as you bring yourself slowly back to outer reality, feeling stable, at ease, and consciously present.
When you’re ready, count down from 5,4,3,2,1, and open your eyes, and back in your surroundings.
Take your time getting up, possibly have a pre planned glass of water for drinking before you get on with the rest of your your day / or night.
Benefits of Candle Meditation
You will gain several useful benefits from this practice.
1) This technique will help you calm your mind, and develop a more centered and balanced inner peace feeling.
2) It is an excellent exercise for training the mind to focus and concentrate on one single object or thought consistent with your will. This improved concentration can help you in every area of your life.
3) Another benefit from the practice of candle meditation will enable you to open your third eye also known as Ajna chakra which allows you to develop better intuition and gain wisdom.
Over time, for some – you may also start receiving images and thoughts that don’t belong to you, or don’t seem to – using your everyday mind.
These are from your “Higher Self” or “Spiritual Self“.
You have to interpret these.
They can be symbolic. An example of this is being given an onion with the skin peeled off. It may not make much sense at first, but it could mean as you get further along on your path, the layers are peeled away until you get to the core of it.
The layers that had been peeled off could symbolise the layers or stages you are going through.
Learn to trust your own intuition.
