Many people aren`t interested in the subject of self-exploration as they are fully absorbed with basic needs of survival like food, a roof over their heads and a job if they are lucky.
Some people however are, and their needs expand their world into seeking love, self-esteem and the esteem of others. Others bring this further where their needs expand to include truth, beauty and justice.
The different levels of human needs and the search for them is known as “self-actualisation” or authenticity which is about learning to be your true self at an intimate level.
This is about reaching your full potential and moving forward. Becoming stronger, wiser, improving your understanding of life and the purpose of living in your special role in your family and society whilst accomplishing your goals and balancing that with your relationships with other people through expressing both positive emotions and negative emotions freely.
In doing that, you learn to accept yourself as you are with grace and ease, respect your thinking, your feelings and your emotions whilst assertively expressing your needs in a respectful and adaptive way.
It isn`t a permanent or static state, we become authentic one moment at a time. We choose authenticity in every thought, every feeling, every action and every deed and it is a life-long process requiring self-understanding and self-acceptance and taking full responsibility for yourself, your actions and their consequences while at the same time accepting the ups and downs of life. This often means being open to and accepting other people and their needs and boundaries too, and being willing to compromise with others without conceding your own, so that your rights are respected also.
In simple truth – authenticity is about being open to the experience of life and being the author and authority of your own life.
Your True Self and Living an Extraordinary Life
To become your true self is to recognise yourself as a unique human being and maximise your potential.
You need to know yourself first by looking into the complete picture of your life !
Take full responsibility for everything in your life, including the people and situations, knowing you created them in the first place.
Then become the Creator of your life and create solutions. This may mean discarding some long-held beliefs and gaining new ones. You need to discover your true desires which can be a process in and of itself.
This means being honest about your strengths and weaknesses. Looking at your interests, abilities and skills.
The following questions may help you get to know your true desires and yourself at a deeper level, they are offered here to help you.
- What excites you and makes you feel alive?
- What are your greatest strengths?
- What are the things you would do in life if no one judged you, and you had no fear whatsoever?
- What would be your ideal life?
- If money was no object, how would your life be?
- Which human being do you admire most, and why?
Make a pact with yourself today to not be defined by your past. Sometimes the greatest thing to come out of all your hard work isn’t what you get for it, but what you become for it. Shake things up today! Be You…Be Free…Share. ~Steve Maraboli
