Overcoming Social Anxiety / Social Phobia Treatment
So many people suffer from Social Anxiety Disorder (also known as Social Phobia) and related conditions.
It is probably the most common type of anxiety disorder and is often ignored.
Most people can relate to feeling shy or being under confident in some situations and having an uncomfortable feeling of nervousness, but Social Anxiety Disorder or Social Phobia is much more than this !
It is a powerful fear that has such a far-reaching impact into the lives of its sufferers.
At the heart of it – are the fears of ‘being judged’ and ‘rejection’.
Everyday tasks that most of us take for granted – like going to work, meeting friends and relations, shopping, talking on the telephone, even just going out of the house for a walk- can be a huge ordeal with constant feelings of anxiety and self-consciousness. Public speaking, talking to authority figures or meeting strangers is often completely out of the question.
I am not referring here to being introvert of extrovert – people differ in their degree of being self-contained or inward looking which is quite varied and natural.
I am talking about people who are particularly socially inhibited and experience excessive feelings of nervousness or dread in relation to feared social situations. Often they report specific physical symptoms such as trembling, dry mouth, rapid breathing and heart-rate, sweating or extreme blushing.
They feel they are going to have a panic attack and some do.
Sufferers tend to be very self-conscious and worried about whether others might be thinking about them in a very negative way. They tend to focus on past social negative situations, worrying about them and going over and over them in their minds – the humiliation and embarrassment.
They so often have an over-riding feeling of being worthless, and therefore their ability to succeed across a wide range of personal and professional situations is blocked.
Over time, many sufferers tend to get worse, with the fears gradually taking over virtually every part of their lives where they can start to become very inhibited or defensive in situations, often having ‘private’ breakdowns and feelings of constantly being drained.
This so often leads to depression and loneliness.
Experiencing these kinds of feelings and thoughts can be very isolating, but know that you are not alone.
Many other people have experienced and continue to experience the same thoughts and feelings.
However, there is help available, work continues within therapy and the field of Social Anxiety and many techniques and methods are now employed in helping people cope with and overcome the thoughts and feelings that drive Social Anxiety.
Therapy can help people to come to resolutions with their inner conflicts.
